A few weeks ago, I had a dream that I could fly. I was soaring through my house, up and down the stairs, and I actually felt it in my body! It was the most amazing thing ever! I asked mommy if people could fly, but she just sighed and said, “Only in planes, Honey” I didn’t believe her though, and I still don’t. I read a book that said grown-ups don’t believe in magic because they’re too busy. It’s Spring break though, and I’m only 8 so I have lots of time for magic! So I’ve been trying to figure out how to fly in real life. I just know I can do it. I remember how it felt in my dream!

Every day, I’ve tried something new. I tried holding a plastic bag in each hand and jumping down the three little stairs in the basement, but it didn’t work. I tried lots of times until mommy found me and told me to stop before I hurt myself. Then, I tried a scarf. I thought it would work like a parachute, but it just folded up when I jumped down. Next, I thought I could put pieces of cardboard under my arms and flap like a bird. That didn’t work either.

Today, I’m trying plastic bags again, but in a different way. I think, maybe if I tie a bunch of them together like a parachute, it might actually work! They won’t fold up like the scarf did. After I eat lunch, I sit in my room on the floor and tie lots of bags together with the handles. My hands are shaking because I’m so excited, but I try really hard to tie them close together so there aren’t any holes.

I’m standing at the top of the big stairs now. I know this one is going to work! My tummy is full of butterflies and my fingers are tingly. I hold my plastic parachute in my hands in front of me and then I whip it up over my head and jump. I feel the air catch in my parachute and lift me up. It’s working! I’m sailing down the stairs like a bird! At the bottom of the steps, I let go of my parachute so I can land on the floor, but I keep floating all on my own. I'm doing it! This is just like my dream!

I lean forward and push myself off the stairs, and now I’m gliding through the dining room and into the kitchen. Mommy left the back door open to let in the cool spring breeze. I want to fly in the sky like an eagle, so I speed out the door with a big WHOOSH. I aim for the sky, where I can see colorful finches darting back and forth above my head. I’m flying towards the sun and I close my eyes to soak in the warm sunshine while the clouds tickle my skin.

I knew I could fly!
