Georgia O'keeffe painting, "From the Faraway Nearby" desert landscape, orange sunset behind a large decaying animal skull, with many large antlers. Small desert mountains on the horizon.

I chose to showcase this piece of art made by, Georgia O'Keeffe. Called, "From the Faraway Nearby" made in 1937.

When I first saw this piece I knew I wanted to share it due to how strongly I felt it related to feelings of isolation. Although this piece is fairly simple, it is so detailed in my opinion. From the detailing in the skull, to the details of the desert landscape.

I admire how this piece is so simple, and minimal. It is not loud, or overly busy, it is just the right amount of detail in my opinion. I also admire the simplicity of the background details, I think the gradient in the background is beautiful, it also captures the viewers attention, without taking away from the main portion of the piece, the skull.

The thing I admire most about this piece of art, is how versatile the meaning is. I think everyone who sees this piece will have an entirely different interpretation of it. I saw this piece as meaning so many different things, my first interpretation of this piece was time passing. Time almost slipping away, the skull decaying rapidly, to me, it seemed like a metaphor for losing track of time, and not noticing how quickly time passes without anyone noticing.

Yet, I also interpreted this piece as loneliness, I saw the skull rotting away in a lonely desert without anyone noticing, or passing through. I also saw this piece as longing, for companionship.

The thing I found most artistic about this piece was the title. "From the Faraway Nearby." The language used in this title sounded so musical to me, despite it not rhyming. I think this title gives so much more meaning to this piece by showing the viewer the aspects to this piece. Being faraway, yet also nearby to me means, feeling cut off from society. Feeling lonely, and isolated, forgotten about in a desert, yet still being somewhat near or connected to society, physically or emotionally.

This piece to me, shows many feelings all related to being lonely. Feeling not cared for, or missed by anyone, yet also lost. Georgia O'Keeffe, is a legendary desert artist, known for painting New Mexican landscapes. Not only is her work still inspiring artists around the world today. Her work also played a huge and powerful role in the development of modern art within America. Her work has brought life to the New Mexican desert landscape.

This piece is so meaningful, and one I feel definitely deserves to be showcased, due to its powerful meaning. I most admire how this piece gives viewers an opportunity to give it their own meaning, from how they view the piece. That to me, is what makes art so meaningful to viewers.
