AN EKPHRASIS POEM FOR EDVARD MUNCH

Updated: Dec 4, 2020

Orange and yellow sunset swirls in the background. A man stands on a pier, holding his face in his hands. Mouth agape in a permeant scream.

"Wicked Mind"

by Andrea Lara Ontiveros

A sky exhibiting twilight shades and

deep, swift waters darkening the should of day.

As he walked the pier like he had before,

a sense of agitation trembled his core.

Walking, walking, walking, close to slipping.

Building up within, all tension.

He looked down at the dim waters.

Trying to collect himself,

he could now feel some ease.

Pulling thick air into his lungs

in and out.

But like repeated stroking

punctures through flesh,

he teared back into the

mind's wickedness.

Inhalation made intolerable.

Aware of his surroundings,

and people walking around him

but he can't help what is about

to be done.

He places his hands on his slender face,

cheeks pale and clammy.

Trying to get a grip of himself once more.

So much apprehension in him, he begs for his freedom.

A scream blearing out, then screeching.

Mouth and eyes wide, finally releasing.

And he proceeds to walk down the pier now,

carrying on with his day,

Just like any other.
